Medical Guardian Mobile Alert Detailed Review

Background

Medical Guardian Logo

Medical Guardian is a leading provider of medical alert systems based in Philadelphia, PA. They are a reputable company that strives to offer good equipment choices, fair terms, and responsive, friendly service to their customers. Besides standard home medical alert systems, they are industry leaders in bringing new systems based on the latest technologies to consumers.

Currently, they offer two mobile on-the-go medical alert systems. Mobile 2.0 was introduced in August 2021. A year before that, in 2020, they introduced the Mini Guardian, a trendsetting petite-sized mobile GPS pendant. Both these systems have unique points that could make them the best choice for your or your parent’s needs.

Mini Guardian

Mini Guardian
Mini Guardian

Mini Guardian is a small all-in-one mobile help pendant device that contains all system features, including: help button, speaker, microphone, GPS, SIM card and phone connection, water-resistance, and fall detection (optional).

This user-friendly pendant can be worn with a lanyard, or clipped your belt or bag (except when using fall detection).

When an emergency occurs, the user can press the help button to activate a call to Medical Guardian’s emergency response center. When the call connects to a monitoring specialist, the user can speak directly into their pendant to ask for help.

Mobile Guardian Updated: Mobile 2.0

Medical Guardian Mobile 2.0
Mobile 2.0

Mobile 2.0 is an update of the original Mobile Guardian product. The new Mobile 2.0 has a smaller base device that is just two-thirds the size and weight of the previous device. Although not as petite as the Mini Guardian, it’s smaller than other similar pendants available.

Mobile 2.0 works similarly to the Mini Guardian. The main speaker device is fundamental to the system, that’s the device to have on you on the all the time.

The device works just like the all-in-one Mini Guardian pendant, although it sports a very different look and design. Another distinguishing feature of Mobile 2.0 is that it comes with a secondary help transmitter button (that works like a remote control clicker).

Design and Wearability

Both Medical Guardian mobile medical alert systems offer good wearability given their lightness in weight and neat appearance. The Mini weighs a mere 1.3 oz – the lightest pendant of its kind we’ve come across. Mobile 2.0 is marginally heavier at 1.7 oz.

Mini Guardian weighs 1.3 oz (under 7 quarter coins in weight), and Mobile 2.0 weighs 1.7 oz (under 9 quarter coins).

We find it helpful that an optional secondary help button comes with the Mobile 2.0 package. The secondary help button will transmit a signal to the Mobile 2.0 base speaker device to call the monitoring center. It’s a remote control clicker to activate an alert, just as if you were to push the help button on the device itself.

The “remote” feature differentiates it from other similar products. The system even offers an optional wall button accessory that can be activated by voice. If no button is not near enough for you to push, voice activation offers one more way to send an alert. These remote activation features offer add convenience and flexibility to using the system.

The secondary help clicker is a very light button. It does not need to carry all the technologies embedded in the main speaker device.

GPS Location Tracking with Data Sharing

Both Medical Guardian mobile alert systems come with GPS and wifi location tracking. With location tracking, the device’s location is transmitted to the monitoring center.

Through the MyGuardian portal and app, customers have the option to share device location data with their care contacts (family, friends, and caregivers).

In addition to GPS for locations tracking technology, the Mini Guardian and Mobile 2.0 pendants also come equipped with wifi locations tracking or WPS (wifi positioning system) technology.

Current GPS technology, while it works well on its own, may be less sensitive in indoor environments. WPS pinpoints specific locations by using wifi hotspots footprint data. Having data from both systems increases the speed and accuracy when pinpointing the location of the mobile alert device.

Note that a subscriber is not required to have wifi enabled at home to use their Medical Guardian mobile device. To learn more, we have a post devoted to Mobile Medical Alert Systems With GPS & WiFi Positioning.

Automatic Fall Detection

Both Mini Guardian and Mobile 2.0 can be upgraded to include automatic fall detection. With optional fall detection turned on, the systems will automatically detect falls; and place an emergency call.

Medical alert companies, including Medical Guardian, typically advise customers to manually push on their help button if they are able to. This is a safety precaution as no fall detection system can detect 100% of falls.

For fall detection to work as designed, product users will need to wear their devices with a lanyard instead of clipping it to their belt.

We found some really helpful tips about fall detection on the Mini Guardian manual. It would be useful to read through any given instructions, and to speak with a support person on how to best use your fall detection device.

Other Models – Mobile Guardian etc

Medical Guardian is a company that stays current to bring the latest technologies to their customers. Alongside market and technological changes, Medical Guardian’s mobile medical alert products have evolved over time.

These past models are still available from their website under their Renew Program. What’s great is that it allows customers to get these products without any upfront purchase fee.

Mobile Guardian

Mobile Guardian
Mobile Guardian

Mobile Guardian was Medical Guardian’s first mobile GPS alert system, introduced in late 2013. When Mobile Guardian was first released, it featured a portable speakerphone base device about the size of a deck of cards. The device size was eventually tapered down a pager-sized unit, and Medical Guardian continued on the path of improvement.

Mobile 2.0 vs Mobile Guardian
Right: Mobile 2.0 (New) vs Left: Mobile Guardian (Old)

Mobile 2.0 is the new generation replacement to Mobile Guardian. The speakerphone base device is clearly smaller and lighter (1.7 oz vs. 2.8 oz before). One feature that has remained since the initial Mobile Guardian is the pairing of the device with a secondary help button (or optional transmitter button).

Active Guardian

Active guardian vs. Mini Guardian
Active Guardian and Mini Guardian compared

Active Guardian was introduced back in 2017. It’s an all-in-one button and speaker device just like Mini Guardian. When an emergency occurs, the customer can push the button on their Active Guardian device and speak directly into it. Both systems have similar features.

Compared to Active Guardian, the newer Mini Guardian presents improvements such as:
1) Smaller size and updated look. Active Guardian weighs 2.6 oz vs. the Mini’s 1.3 oz. In terms of size, Mini Guardian is 54% (a bit over half) the volume of Active Guardian.
2) Mini Guardian is more fully integrated with Medical Guardian’s MyGuardian portal. Customers are able to retrieve system location and status reports. They also have the option of sharing these reports with care contacts, such as family members.

Before Active Guardian, Medical Guardian’s even earlier all-in-one pendant product was the Premium Guardian.

Overall

For seniors or their children looking into a suitable mobile alert system with GPS, Medical Guardian combines technologically up-to-date devices and user-friendly options with quality monitoring. In addition, they have updated the MyGuardian app in 2021 to allow for location reports sharing with caregivers (optional to use).

Medical Guardian’s Mini Guardian and Mobile 2.0 have similar features. If you prefer having a single, small, all-in-one pendant system, Mini Guardian would be the better fit. If you like a system that can accommodate additional buttons to wear or to place around the home, Mobile 2.0 will be the better choice.

    • This is something you need to confirm with your doctor. The Medical Guardian representative we spoke with suggested wearing the wrist bracelet button that will activate the portable speaker unit. The portable speaker unit is where the GPS mechanism resides. You can contact Medical Guardian (1-800-311-6142) for specific details. Do consult with your physician before using the product.
